codeXtremeApps 2010

the past one week had been a blur, with be hardly at home. finally my boring summer was exciting for awhile.

Friday 23/7
Got conscripted into taking part in codeXtremeApps 2010. Was very reluctant because I didn’t had good experience with competitions (lost to a sec 3 guy when i took part in NOI as a JC2, lost to a team that didn’t write a single line of code in iHPC Quest).

The night before the competition, I dreamt that I was on the MRT platform waiting for the train. When the train is approaching, 3 guys infront of me stick out their legs onto the track, and at the last moment before the train arrives, one guy step down onto the track. In my dream I turned around that exact same moment to save myself from the gore, cursed “KNN” under my breadth and proceed to the bus interchange.

That didn’t start my day well. But all these was forgotten when I received a phone call from SMU Student Center for Financial Assistance called telling me I was offered the SMU Merit Award. I almost jumped for joy. No need to worry about where to beg/borrow/steal money for a laptop anymore.

So codeXtremeApps 2010 began with me and Weekiat coding from 6+pm all the way until 4am, when we more or less have a feature complete prototype, after which i promptly fell asleep until 6+am to tie up some lose ends. Meanwhile, Wee Kiat was still coding furiously.

Edmund arrived at 8+am, so we proceed to work to finetune our app, with me working on the backend codes for the “hi-fi” version, Edmund doing design for the “hi-fi” version, and Wee Kiat working on the iPhone version which I created.

By 4+pm, we were done and basically waiting for the competition to end. I also managed to play 30min of MapleStory:P

Thursday 29/7
Attended the Award Ceremony. We won only 3rd position. Not remarkable, but considering that we are Info Sys Management students, I think that was pretty well done. We didn’t even expect that we can get into finals in the first place, since all the teams were very strong teams and we felt kinda intimated by their mastery of Google Map and Facebook APIs. Still, we won :) .

But as the wise Prof YL says, winning is nothing.

Hence i spent the 24hrs doing nothing:)
